Content Opportunity Score

Upload an SEMrush organic export to discover high-potential content opportunities. Our tool analyzes competitor data—ranking keywords, traffic, and difficulty—to generate a clear, actionable score.

How the Content Opportunity Score Formula Works

The Content Opportunity Score uses a sophisticated algorithm to give you a single, actionable score from 0–100. It evaluates four key metrics using logarithmic scaling and non-linear curves to provide an intelligent assessment that isn't skewed by outliers.

The score is based on these weighted components:

  • Estimated Traffic (40%)
  • Keyword Difficulty (15%)
  • Average Search Volume (25%)
  • Ranking Keywords (15%)

While the full calculation is complex, the core logic can be represented conceptually as:

// Component Scores are calculated on a logarithmic scale (0 to 1)
Traffic_Score    = log(Traffic + 1) / log(MaxTraffic + 1)
Keyword_Score    = log(Keywords + 1) / log(MaxKeywords + 1)
Volume_Score     = log(Avg. Volume + 1) / log(MaxVolume + 1)
Difficulty_Score = (1 - (Avg. KD / 100))^2

// These are combined, weighted, and adjusted
Base = (Traffic_Score * 0.40) + (Difficulty_Score * 0.15) + ...
Final Score = min((Base * 100) + 15, 100)

How to Use This Metric

A higher Content Opportunity Score indicates a page has an excellent balance of high traffic potential and achievable keyword difficulty. Here’s how to interpret it:

  • 75% and above: High-priority opportunity. These pages represent the best targets for you to analyze and create similar content for.
  • 50%–74%: Moderate opportunity. These pages are worth considering, especially if they align with your core strategy.
  • Below 50%: Low opportunity. These are likely not immediate priorities unless they serve a specific strategic purpose.

Combine this metric with your SEO strategy—focusing first on high-scoring URLs for faster results.
