AI search and answer engines

There is more advice than evidence in this area right now. This module sticks to what the people running these systems have actually said, which is less than you have been told.

What this looks like when it is done badly. A business pays for an "AI optimisation" retainer, gets an llms.txt file and a report about entity salience, and is never told that Google publishes a page saying no new files or markup are required. Twelve months later nothing has changed, because nothing was done that would change anything.

Hours and tool costs are RedSEO’s own estimates from client work and from teaching this material, not industry survey data. They assume a business owner doing the work themselves on a site under about 50 pages.

There is more advice than evidence in this area, and a lot of it is being sold. So this module sticks to what the people running these systems have actually published, which turns out to be less dramatic and more useful than most of what you will read.

Google says there is nothing extra to do

This is the single most important thing on the page, and it comes from Google’s own documentation on AI features: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

And, more pointedly: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.”

The eligibility requirement is that your page is indexed and eligible for snippets. That is it. Which means the work that gets you into AI Overviews is module 2, module 6 and module 9, already done, under a different name.

Google also notes that traffic from AI features already appears in the standard Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate dashboard you are missing.

The llms.txt question, answered honestly

We publish an llms.txt generator and a validator, so treat what follows as evidence against our own interest.

llms.txt is a proposed convention for giving language models a curated map of your site. It is a reasonable idea. What it is not, currently, is something the major systems act on. Google’s AI features documentation says explicitly that no AI text files are needed. And the usage data is stark.

Almost nothing fetches an llms.txt fileBar chart of llms.txt files in May 2026: 97 percent received zero requests, and 3 percent received any request at all.Received zero requests97%Received any request3%

Of the few requests that did happen, SEO audit tools were the largest single source at 21.7 percent and AI retrieval bots were 1.1 percent. We publish an llms.txt generator, so this is evidence against our own interest: adoption grew 8.8 times in a year while usage did not follow.

Originality.ai, over 3 million sites monitored June 2025 to May 2026, published 2 July 2026

Originality.ai monitored over 3 million websites from June 2025 to May 2026 and found that 97 percent of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. Where requests did happen, SEO audit tools were the largest single source at 21.7 percent, while AI retrieval bots accounted for 1.1 percent. Adoption itself grew 8.8 times over the year, from 4,088 sites to 36,120, which is the awkward part: adoption is climbing quickly and usage is not.

So: add one if you want your site to be legible to agents and developer tooling, which is a real if narrow benefit. Do not add one expecting a ranking or citation effect, and be sceptical of anyone selling it as an AI strategy.

Have us audit what assistants say about you

What does seem to matter

Given all of that, the useful adjustments are stylistic rather than technical.

Answer first. Assistants quote passages. A page that states its answer in the opening paragraph is far more quotable than one that builds to it over nine hundred words. This is also just better writing, which is the recurring theme.

Be the source of a fact. Specific, attributable, checkable claims get cited. Vague summaries of other people’s claims do not, because the model already has the original.

State your identity in structured data. An assistant describing your business is assembling facts from wherever it can find them. Giving it an unambiguous machine-readable version reduces the chance of it inventing one.

Whether to block AI crawlers at all

Google offers Google-Extended to limit use in AI training while keeping normal Search access, and other crawlers have their own tokens. Blocking is a legitimate choice.

Understand the trade. Blocking retrieval crawlers removes you from the answers as well as the training data, so you disappear from a surface where your competitors will still appear. For most small businesses trying to be found, that is the wrong side of the trade. It is still a choice worth making deliberately rather than inheriting.

What I would do in your position

Run the visibility checker and read what assistants currently say about you. Fix any wrong facts at the source. Make sure your Organization or LocalBusiness markup is accurate. Then go back to module 6, because that is where the actual work is.

Re-check quarterly. This moves faster than search rankings, and the failure worth catching early is not absence, it is a confidently wrong fact repeated at scale.

Check where you stand

Four tools. The visibility checker is the one worth running first, because it gives you the baseline the rest of this module is trying to move.

Get the AI-search basics right without buying anything

Most of this list is work you have already done in earlier modules. That is the honest shape of AI search right now, and it is a feature rather than a disappointment.

  1. Confirm your pages are indexed and snippet-eligible

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for snippets to appear in AI features. If you carry nosnippet, you have opted out. That is a module 2 and module 7 check, not a new one.

  2. Answer the question in the first paragraph

Assistants quote passages, not pages. The piece that gets used is the one where the answer sits near the top in plain language, before the throat-clearing.

  3. Put the facts about your business in structured data

Organization or LocalBusiness with an accurate name, address, phone and description. This is how a machine states what you are without inferring it. Module 9.

  4. Search for your own brand in an assistant and read what comes back

This is the baseline. Note what it gets wrong, because wrong facts usually trace to a specific stale page or listing you can fix.

  5. Decide deliberately whether to allow AI crawlers

Blocking them removes you from the systems as well as from the training. That is a legitimate choice, and it should be a choice rather than a default you inherited.

  6. Add llms.txt only if you want agent-friendliness

Not for rankings. Google says it does not need it and the request data says almost nothing fetches it. It costs ten minutes, so add it if you like, with accurate expectations.

  7. Check the Web search type in Search Console

Google says traffic from AI features already appears in the standard Performance report under "Web". There is no separate report to buy.

  8. Re-check your brand answer quarterly

This changes faster than search rankings and the failure mode is a confidently wrong fact repeated at scale, which is worth catching early.

Can you do this yourself?

You can do this yourself if

  • You have done modules 2, 6 and 9. Almost all of what helps here is the same work, and if it is done you are most of the way there already.
  • You can write answers that come first and context second, which is a style change rather than a technical one.
  • You want a one-time setup and a quarterly check rather than a monitoring programme.

You cannot do this yourself if

  • You need ongoing monitoring of brand mentions across several models, which is a recurring measurement job rather than a setup task and does not have a good free tool.
  • Assistants are describing your business wrongly and the cause is spread across pages, listings and third-party sites you do not control.
  • You are being sold an "AEO strategy" that is materially different from good SEO. Google says there are "no additional requirements… nor other special optimizations necessary", so a strategy that looks nothing like module 6 deserves hard questions.

Questions people ask about this

How do I rank in Google AI Overviews?
By being indexed and eligible for snippets, which you already are if module 2 is done. Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary". The work is ordinary good SEO under a different name.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for search. Google says you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features", and Originality.ai found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026 across a study of over 3 million sites. Add one for agent and developer-tooling friendliness if you want; do not expect a ranking or citation effect. We publish a generator for it and this is still our honest read.
Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?
Much less than it is sold as. Google publishes that no special optimisation is required, so an AEO strategy that looks nothing like ordinary content and technical work deserves hard questions. The genuine differences are stylistic: answer first, be the source of specific facts, and state your identity in structured data.
How do I track traffic from AI search?
It is already in Search Console. Google says traffic from AI features appears in the standard Performance report under the "Web" search type, so there is no separate report or product you are missing.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It is a legitimate choice and it should be a deliberate one. Google offers Google-Extended to limit AI training use while keeping Search access. Understand the trade: blocking retrieval crawlers removes you from the answers as well as the training data, so you vanish from a surface where competitors still appear.
What actually helps with AI visibility?
Answering the question in the opening paragraph, because assistants quote passages rather than pages. Being the source of specific checkable facts rather than summarising other people's. And accurate Organization or LocalBusiness markup so a model does not have to infer who you are.
